Anthropologists training to do fieldwork in far-off, unfamiliar places prepare for significant challenges with regard to language, customs, and other cultural differences. However, like other travelers to unknown places, they are often unprepared to deal with the most basic and necessary requirement: food. Although there are many books on the anthropology of food, Adventures in Eating is the first intended to prepare students for the uncomfortable dining situations they may encounter over the course of their careers. Whether sago grubs, jungle rats, termites, or the pungent durian fruit are on the table, participating in the act of sharing food can establish relationships vital to anthropologists' research practices and knowledge of their host cultures. Using their own experiences with unfamiliar-and sometimes unappealing-food practices and customs, the contributors explore such eating moments and how these moments can produce new understandings of culture and the meaning of food beyond the immediate experience of eating it. They also address how personal eating experiences and culinary dilemmas can shape the data and methodologies of the discipline. The main readership of Adventures in Eating will be students in anthropology and other scholars, but the explosion of food media gives the book additional appeal for fans of No Reservations and Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel.

With these recipes, you'll be able to avoid major health problems, feel better, and rebalance your body. It might take a little time, but if you stick with it, you're sure to live longer and live better. Not every nutrition textbook will give you this information. Studies have shown, however, that nutrition, diet and exercise are key parts of avoiding cancer, retaining healthy vision, maintaining good cognition, and keeping your emotions on an even keel. Nutrition books that don't recognize this fact are encouraging you to risk your health and even your life. The recipes in this book are designed to save you from the wide range of health problems that can be caused or exacerbated by bad eating. They focus on protein-rich foods such as quinoa, a South American grain-like food that is known for encouraging long life. This book will also give you all the information you need to understand the value of not eating a lot of food all the time. Our systems weren't designed to take this kind of constant use, making it important to give them an occasional break. If you're tired of dealing with health problems or the prospect of developing them, it's time to make a change. Spend some time checking out great recipes such as our quinoa pizza or a healthy breakfast burrito, and get your nutrition profile back on track.

The movement towards juicing and juice fasting as a dietary option is growing as both a lifestyle practice and as a viable industry. Whether household or commercially based, it is essential that users serious enough to purchase products take the time to educate themselves with regard to the numerous options that are available. Equally important, knowledge of sound and safe juicing practice is essential in matching both juicing equipment and foods to individual need and preference. Juicing programs require direction in order to allow for proper and successful planning. This book examines many of the considerations related to successful juicing. It looks at basic equipment requirements, outlines options for start-up and selection of programs and products, and provides numerous ideas on how to go about creating pleasantly tasting juice mixtures. A great deal of the article is devoted to nutritional considerations, outlining benefits, potential hazards, and specific guidelines for best nutritional choice juicing practice. A significant consideration dealt with is how to best approach juicing as a means of weight loss. Closely related, the book also presents guidelines for successful juice fasting."People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas."~ Eric Tompkins

ABOUT THE BOOK "Gluten-free" seems to be all the rage these days. As diagnoses of gluten sensitivity and the autoimmune disorder Celiac disease have increased, more and more restaurants are offering gluten-free options, some supermarkets have aisles dedicated to the stuff, and even national coffee shop chains have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon. Even people without allergies have begun to eschew gluten, citing improved digestion, clearer thinking, and better moods. So what's the deal with "gluten-free"? What does it mean? Is it just a gimmick? Or is it a healthful eating choice? And here's the big question: can you lose weight by adopting a gluten-free diet? All these questions will be answered in this guide, but let's get the biggie out of the way: yes, you can lose weight by adopting a gluten-free diet. You can also, however, gain weight on a gluten-free diet. Ditching the gluten is not a dieting "Get Out of Jail Free" card. Switching out wheat and other gluten-containing foods can help your body streamline its fat-burning processes and improve your overall health, but it's not a magic bullet. Gluten-free foods can contain just as much sugar, fat, artificial preservatives, and other "bad" stuff as their "normal" counterparts. MEET THE AUTHOR Lily is very close to finishing her Ph.D. at the University of Oxford. She also has an utterly non-lucrative Masters of Fine Arts in poetry. "Lily McNeil" is a pseudonym. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although Celiac disease affects less than 1% of the population, it is a serious autoimmune condition that is triggered by eating the gluten protein. In response to the protein, the small intestine destroys its own villi, which are responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. Without these nutrients, the body becomes severely malnourished. That's where a gluten-free diet comes in. Those who have Celiac disease must adhere to a very strict diet of no gluten whatsoever, even in vitamin pills and lip balm. But even if you don't have C

Confectionery and chocolate manufacture has been dominated by large-scale industrial processing for several decades. It is often the case, though, that a trial and error approach is applied to the development of new products and processes, rather than verified scientific principles. The purpose of this book is to describe the features of unit operations used in confectionary manufacturing. In contrast to the common technology-focused approach to this subject, this volume offers a scientific, theoretical account of confectionery manufacture, building on the scientific background of chemical engineering. The large diversity of both raw materials and end products in the confectionery industry makes it beneficial to approach the subject in this way. The industry deals with a variety of vegetable based raw materials as well as milk products, eggs, gelatin, and other animal-based raw materials. A study of confectionery and chocolate engineering must therefore examine the physical and chemical, as well as the biochemical and microbiological properties of the processed materials. By characterizing the unit operations of confectionery manufacture the author, who has over 40 years' experience in confectionery manufacture, aims to open up new possibilities for improvement relating to increased efficiency of operations, the use of new materials, and new applications for traditional raw materials. The book is aimed at food engineers, scientists, technologists in research and industry, as well as graduate students on relevant food and chemical engineering-related courses.

The dictionary meaning of detoxification is the process of removing toxic substances or qualities and a medical treatment of an alcoholic or drug addict involving abstention from drink or drugs until the bloodstream is free of toxins. This is how detoxification is defined. According to a source, "Detoxification is a normal body process that eliminates or neutralizes toxins via the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin."1From the above definitions it is quite explicit that detox drugs only deals in getting rid of the toxics that are born or made by drugs. Every medicine gives rise to toxic bodies and "repeated use of medications can weaken your detoxification organs and your body's ability to detoxify."2The definitions mentioned above are correct but they miss out one important on which this book is based. Toxins are not only created by alcohol and medicinal drugs but also by our extremely polluted environment and the daily chemically processed foods we eat. These toxins are accumulated daily because we don't live in vacuum, so, they have to be removed on daily basis as well. The medicinal methods of detoxifying are known to people for decades, but, a common man is less aware of the natural ways of removing toxins. This e-book focuses on the natural ways of getting rid of the daily toxins by fruits, water, special diets and etc. Moreover, detoxification by fruits and other natural ways is the best idea as they have no side effects, whereas, detox drugs may have side effects which the seller will not tell you in order to sell their products. Now don't get fooled by the detox drugs sellers, do your own detox by the natural detoxifiers!

There is a profound absence of scientific evidence to support the claims of most of the popular weight-loss programmes. Most diets can guarantee that if you eat 1,200 calories a day and exercise moderately, you will lose weight. It would probably be safe also to guarantee that you cannot sustain this regime. That is the problem with most weight-loss diets: they create loss but the loss cannot be sustained. Brooks Carder, a scientist with a businessman's mentality for the bottom-line, made a firm decision never to go on a calorie-controlled diet again. Yet he was facing health problems and needed to lose weight. Dr. Carder's salvation began with his love for Italian food and his introduction to the Mediterranean diet - not an actual diet - but a set of dietary principles focusing on whole foods that have been proven to promote health. When he began to lose weight without deprivation or discomfort, his scientific curiosity was challenged and he began to read the scientific literature on obesity, weight loss and diets to understand what was happening. THE LAGUNA BEACH DIET is the culmination of these findings. The book presents an eating and exercise plan for sustained weight loss, along with the science that backs it up. It conforms to the principles of the Mediterranean diet, yet is adapted to the cuisines (besides Italian) of Asia and Mexico, representing the ethnic diversity of Southern California, where THE LAGUNA BEACH DIET originates. Unlike most diets, you do not have to buy special meals, weight portions, count calories or anything of the sort. You simply keep the principles in mind and make the best choices you can, according to the ingredients that you have on hand. Assessment tools for tracking your compliance with the diet and your exercise and charting these along with your weight, will tell you if the process is succeeding. And if it's not, using problem-solving tools will assist you in understanding the problem and dealing with it effectively. Rec.

Next time you are in a crowded public place; look to the person on your left and look to the person on your right. One of you, statistically, will die of cancer. Another one of you will die of a heart attack… unless things change! I can already hear cries of, "It won't be me!" And I hope so. A third of people in Europe, North and South America are dying from cancer, and half are dying from heart attack, and it's spreading rapidly around the world. But it's worse than that; chronic disease, due to obesity and poor diet, is hitting people at a younger age, as the years progress. Our children are becoming chronically ill young adults, who are destined to extend their life by medicine, in pain and misery, without the good quality of life they deserve. Whilst you will find me outspoken and blunt in this book, it is not meant to be judgemental. It just 'is'. I have opinions and I have written them; but I have also drawn this information from masses of research. I grew up with a very fat mother, who was always over-eating and eating the wrong things. She ended up a life-time diabetic around the age of 50, with adult onset diabetes. My way of dealing with this, was to develop a fear of getting fat; and at an early age, got heavily into sport and exercise. I had no idea that 'what' I ate, was equally as important as the amounts that I ate. As the years went by, my nutrition expertise grew, especially when I got into body-building for a period in my life. I met Jill in 1994, and as the years went by, gained weight and maxed out at my heaviest-ever weight, at the age of 57, which was about 5 stone overweight. Because I carried a lot of muscle, I didn't look really fat, just big, and my BMI (Body mass Index) was not overly excessive at 32. My blood pressure though, was high, and although I didn't realise it, my body was crying out for the right food, and in smaller quantities. In November 2011, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and was told if I didn't have it cut out or ra

At once a traveler's tale, a memoir, and a mouthwatering cookbook, Biting through the Skin offers a first-generation immigrant's perspective on growing up in America's heartland. Author Nina Mukerjee Furstenau's parents brought her from Bengal in northern India to the small town of Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1964, decades before you could find long-grain rice or plain yogurt in American grocery stores. Embracing American culture, the Mukerjee family ate hamburgers and softserve ice cream, took a visiting guru out on the lake in their motorboat, and joined the Shriners. Her parents transferred the cultural, spiritual, and family values they had brought with them to their children only behind the closed doors of their home, through the rituals of cooking, serving, and eating Bengali food and making a proper cup of tea. As a girl and a young woman, Nina traveled to her ancestral India as well as to college and to Peace Corps service in Tunisia. Through her journeys and her marriage to an American man whose grandparents hailed from Germany and Sweden, she learned that her family was not alone in being a small pocket of culture sheltered from the larger world. Biting through the Skin shows how we maintain our differences as well as how we come together through what and how we cook and eat. In mourning the partial loss of her heritage, the author finds that, ultimately, heritage always finds other ways of coming to meet us. In effect, it can be reduced to a 4 x 6-inch recipe card, something that can fit into a shirt pocket. It's on just such tiny details of life that belonging rests. In this book, the author shares her shirt-pocket recipes and a great deal more, inviting readers to join her on her journey toward herself and toward a vital sense of food as culture and the mortar of community.
